How to

How to compress an image in four steps

From a heavy photo to a light file, without leaving this page.

  1. 1

    Choose a format

Pick WebP for the widest support, AVIF for the smallest files, or Same format to compress each image as PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG without changing its type.

  2. 2

Leave quality on Smart, or set your own

Smart finds the smallest file that still looks the same as the original, image by image. Choose Custom to set the quality yourself with the slider.

  3. 3

    Drop your images

Drag PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP or SVG files onto the tool, or press Choose images. They are compressed one after another on your device, and each row shows its size before and after.

  4. 4

    Download the smaller files

Download each image from its row, or press Download all to get every result in one zip file. Change the format or quality and the images run again with the new settings.

Formats

WebP, AVIF or the same format?

All three make your pages load faster. Pick by where the image goes and whether its type can change.

  • WebP

Shown by every current browser, and much smaller than JPEG or PNG at the same look. A safe choice for photos and graphics on any website.

    Read more: what WebP is

  • AVIF

Often smaller than WebP for photos, and slower to make. Current browsers show it; use it where the smallest file matters most.

    Read more: what AVIF is

  • Same format

Keeps each image's type and name, so nothing that uses it has to change. PNG is packed losslessly, JPEG and WebP get smaller at the same look, and SVG code is tidied up.

Inside Xodia

The same compressor, for every image on your site

This tool runs the image engine of the Assets panel in Xodia, the visual website builder for real code. There it works on your whole site at once.

  • Every image on your site in one list, with the heavy ones marked
  • Convert one in a click, and the pages that use it point at the new file
  • GIF files compress too, and an animated GIF keeps its animation
  • Every change is saved to your site's code. See the image compressor in Xodia

The Assets panel after converting hero.jpg to WebP: hero.webp is picked at 182 KB, with Saved 1.2 MB (87%) and Updated 2 files, and Compress and AVIF still offered.

Questions

Questions and answers

Is this image compressor free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. It runs on your own device, so it costs us nothing to offer.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The compressor runs in your browser with WebAssembly, and your images never leave your device.

What does Smart quality do?

Smart tries the image at several qualities, compares each result with the original pixel by pixel, and keeps the smallest one that still looks the same. Photos and flat graphics get the settings that suit them, and a JPEG is never saved above the quality it already had.

Should I use WebP or AVIF?

WebP is the safe default: every current browser shows it and it's quick to make. AVIF is often smaller still for photos, but takes longer to make. Both suit the web far better than large PNG or JPEG files. See WebP and AVIF in the glossary.

Why is a result larger than the original?

The original was already well compressed. With Same format, the tool keeps the original when it can't save at least 2%. When converting, use the original instead, or try the other format.

Which files can I use?

PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, BMP and SVG files, up to 50 MB each, as many as you like. SVG files stay SVG. Animated images are left as they are, so no frame is lost. GIF files aren't compressed here; the Assets panel in Xodia compresses them and keeps their animation.

Does it keep the location and camera details in my photos?

When an image is converted to WebP or AVIF, or a JPEG is compressed, the new file is written from the image's pixels, so details stored in a photo, such as where it was taken, are left out. The image keeps its orientation.

Can I compress the images on my website automatically?

In Xodia, yes. The Assets panel lists every image on your site, marks the heavy ones and converts them in a click, then updates the pages that use them. Your AI can point you to them too. See the image compressor in Xodia.
