Edit an AI-built website from GitHub
To edit an AI-built website from GitHub, export the code to a repository you own, import that repository into Xodia, and change the live page visually, so small fixes no longer need another prompt.

Step by step
How to edit an AI-built website from GitHub
Six steps from the tool that made the site to your first pushed edit.
- 1
Export the site to a GitHub repository
In the AI tool that made the site, use its GitHub export or sync to push the code to a repository you own. Check on GitHub that the repository has the site's package.json and source files.
- 2
Connect GitHub in Xodia
Open Connections and connect GitHub, then install the Xodia GitHub App on that repository, or on all your repositories.
- 3
Import the repository
Press New project, choose Import from GitHub and import it. Xodia installs the packages in a private preview, detects the framework and styling and tells you how much you can edit visually.
- 4
Add the preview's environment variables
If the site calls a service, such as a database or an email API, add the variables it needs in Project settings, Environment. Values are stored encrypted. Names starting with VITE_ are built into your pages, so visitors can read them: use public keys only, and keep secret keys in your host's environment settings for server functions.
- 5
Edit on the canvas
Change text, images, links and styles on the live page, at every screen size. Ask your AI for bigger changes from the ask box.
- 6
Push to a branch and deploy
Work on a branch, push your edits and open a pull request, so they sit cleanly beside anything the original tool still pushes. Deploy merges into your live branch, and your host deploys it.
Connect GitHub
You choose which repositories Xodia can open
The Xodia GitHub App asks for access to the repositories you pick, on your account or your organization. You can change that list on GitHub any time.
- Commits pushed on GitHub from outside Xodia show up in site activity. See GitHub
Xodia's Connections page with GitHub connected, ready to import its repositories.
Import
The code opens as it is
If the export is React with Vite or a plain HTML site, it opens with full visual editing; Next.js, Astro and other frameworks are refused at import with the reason. Xodia tells you what it found and what you can edit before you start.
- Nothing to convert, and no extra files added to your repository
- Every stack and its editing level: frameworks
Xodia's New project dialog asking how you want to start: Start a new site from a template or a starter, Import from GitHub to open a site you already have, or Import a website by its address, with Import from GitHub outlined, and the optional Connect your AI line.
Environment
Give the preview the keys it needs
A preview that calls a service needs its variables. Add them once in Environment, encrypted, and the preview restarts with them.
Settings, Environment: two VITE_ variables shown only as hidden, the note that values are stored encrypted and that VITE_ variables are built into your pages for visitors to read, so they hold public keys only, and the row to add another.
Branches
Keep your edits on a branch
If the original tool still pushes to the repository, work on a branch and merge with a pull request, so neither side overwrites the other.
The branch menu in Xodia on the branch spring-hours: the branches on GitHub with main as the live site, then New branch, Open pull request into main, Merge into main (make live) and Delete branch.
Questions
Questions about AI-built sites on GitHub
Can I keep using the tool that made the site?
Yes. Both work on the same repository. Keep your Xodia edits on a branch and merge them with a pull request.
What if the site uses a database or an API?
Add the keys the preview needs in Environment. The live site keeps the settings it already has on its host.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You change text, images, links and styles on the page. The code is there when you or a developer want it.
Which plans can do this?
Every plan can import from GitHub and edit visually; Free allows up to 4 pages a site, not counting collection pages. Branches and pull requests come with paid plans. See pricing.
